May. 3rd, 2008 12:34 amTonight I am ashamed to be a Londoner, in 1985 my Grandfather suffered the first of three heart attacks, in his absence Ken Livingstone asked after his health, made himself known to his workers by name, cared enough to ensure my family were not left out in the cold of Conservative Britain without a penny to their name by signing personal cheques and giving them to my grandmother once a week, my Grandfather was eternally grateful to work for someone he truly believed one day would change this city, He knew that greater things laid ahead, He never survived long enough to see his victory as mayor or to see the way this city has become in decade his granddaughter voted and prayed and crossed every finger to keep That same man in power, It may sound romantised but I am endeared to the stories that are now almost legendary to a working class Irish family.
I thank god sometimes he's not alive to see the fucking shambles that occured tonight.
Middle class conservatism wins again, another excuse to keep the rich rich and poor where they belong, in the decade where I myself will most likely bare a child I will be bringing them into a homophobic, racist, hate filled state where the only thing in the air is anger and toxic fumes spilled out by the middle class Londoners lucky enough to be able to take their offspring to school in huge tank like vehicles, my childrens lungs wont be so lucky, but most likely as Labour slips from power they'll be pushed down the ladder by healthcare, the schooling system and failed by the fact they'll be parented by two of what will now be deemed even lower then the working class scum they're already regarded as.
My children will never see what once was a vibrant great city lead by a forethinker, they will never be able to travel safely on London Transport again or be proud of where they come from, I am proud to say I barely scraped the era of thatcherism and the downtrodden misery, but now we will have to endure again, Goodbye Ken I'm sorry, London failed you.
